Many review solutions focus on early culling – the removal of readily identifiable low risk data that is either obviously non-responsive or, if responsive, then low risk. At the other end of the spectrum is sensitive material that can be readily identified and that needs the scrutiny of a human reviewer. Such data might include privileged items, hot docs, data from top executives, and perhaps material that casts an unfavorable light on the individuals concerned, even if it is not directly related to the matter.
But much of the data falls into a middle ground. It is not readily identifiable as either low value or highly sensitive. In fact, much of it is low value, but there has been no way to readily identify it and to deal with it efficiently. Till now, the only way to deal diligently with this uncertainty has been to manually review all of this middle ground material.
